After much thought, research, prayer, deliberation, and throwing of darts, I received the treatment I felt most drawn to from the very beginning in late September/early October of 2007. It's called radioimmunotherapy, and the specific treatment I received was a regimen called Bexxar.
As of January 2nd, 2008, I'm happy to report clear PET scans and blood work, meaning I'm officially considered cancer-free and in remission. In fact, in my appointment with my oncologist on January 2nd, he even pulled out the old "you need to lose some weight" lecture. Man, it felt great to get back to that lecture after seven months of nothing but cancer lectures. As a bonus: bloodwork in April 2008 looked even better, and I've lost about 20 pounds so far. I guess if cancer can't make me lose some weight, nothing can. UPDATE: Scans remain clear as of January of 2009, meaning a year of living cancer-free. I've also graduated to annual scans, meaning I won't go in again until January of 2010.
I've lost about 40 pounds now, and am training to run a half-marathon--in June of 2009 if training goes exactly as planned, or September if I need a bit more time. This, alone, illustrates how cancer has changed me. Previously, the only time I would run was when I heard the timer on the oven indicating chocolate chip cookies were ready.
If you'd like to find out more about Bexxar, Patients Against Lymphoma has a great overview on their lymphomation.org website.
