$30,000 Doesn't Buy What It Used To

The Billings Gazette tells us a local woman has been charged with embezzling from her employer, to the tune of $30,000.

And while most embezzlers squander the money away on wine and song, this woman put much more thought into her purchases:

(She is accused of) using some of the money to buy wedding announcements, garments from Fredrick's of Hollywood and a new paint job for her fiancé's pickup truck.

That's one lucky fella; now he has a hot truck and a hot girlfriend/fiancee.

But wait. Lest you judge her too harshly, you should know she does have a defense:

According to court records, (the woman) told a Billings police detective she had permission to use company checks for her personal use, saying her boss was aware of her upcoming wedding and was allowing her to make the purchases and pay him back.

So she wasn't just an employee--she was also a client. Hey, with a $30,000 bill, I'm sure she was probably on the company's list of top ten customers.

(Her boss) said he became suspicious when he opened a letter addressed to his company from a mail-order business. The letter said the quilt, scarf and plaques bought by the Billings business for more than $350 were no longer available.

At first glance, a quilt might seem out of place in this whole equation. But give the girl a break: that lingerie from Fredrick's of Hollywood is wee bit drafty.
