AUTHOR PHOTOS BY CELIA MANGUS

September 25, 2005
Photos, We Got Photos

So, if you've read these ramblings the past month, you'll know I've been trying to figure out what to do about photos. I definitely knew I wanted to have some professional photos done, because, hey, I'll take all the help I can get. Plus, I've never particularly liked those author photos that are obviously Polaroid snapshots from last Tuesday.

So: last Saturday, I ventured off to Red Lodge with photographer Celia Mangus (celiamangus.com), and we spent a lovely afternoon venturing to various locations and snapping photos of moi. Celia was a joy to work with--I recommend her highly, should you find yourself in Montana and in need of portraits--and had plenty of great ideas.

After going through the photos, I kicked out a number of them in which I was smiling broadly--the opposite of what I'd usually do with a photo. Unfortunately, as I tried to imagine the photo accompanying materials about my book (a supernatural suspense novel, if you recall), a big smile seemed oddly inappropriate. After all, would you want to buy a scary book from a guy with a big cheddar-eatin' grin?

A few of the photos:

I really like this one. Yes, there's a bit of a grin there--difficult for me not to grin--but I love the framing of the shot. Seems mysterious.

Downed timber near Wild Bill Lake. I like the desolate feel of the background.

Yeah, a wee bit of a smile in this one, too. But not too big of a smile--nothing that says "I enjoy writing about serial killers WAY too much."

When you're having your photo taken in a cemetery, I can tell you that people driving by slow way down to check out what you're doing.

Great pictures! I like the third one best.

I like the second one. Honestly, the fourth is probably the best shot *of you,* but the graveyard thing is just sooo hokey.

T.L.

I like the first one, and there is something oddly delicious about someone who has a 'cheddar-eating grin' in a serial killer. Like maybe this is the picture of the killer?!

Seems I've already left a comment. Oh well, if this one disappears, I'll assume you're ditching them, out of jealousy because of my literary brilliance. Perhaps, not wishing anyone to discover your future competition? I'm slightly off-kilter, don't mind me.
I LOVE the graveyard photo. Hokey? Nah, the message I got is here I am in a graveyard, and look how smug I look. Because death ain't scary when you got Jesus.
I like the one with you behind the tree too, but I picture you saying "peekaboo" and then hiding again.
GREAT pics, all of em. Any one of them will look fantastic on your book!

I like the second one. It's in color and it has that, "I live in the woods with my muse" look!

Great pics! I like 1, 3, and 4... the hiding in the trees one is quite possibly my favorite... though I also like the "woodsy guy in a vest" shot (aka #3). I think I like the cemetary one for the non-horizontal angle... wow, I'm not very helpful, am I?? But very nice pics! (I usually hate pics of myself.)

I love the first one and I like the cemetary shot. :)M

The first one is okay but it just doesn't speak to me as much as the timber one. But, I like the smiling one that says 'I enjoy writing about serial killers...' the best. The cemetary one looks too much like G.P. Taylor's picture.

Oh, I am loving 'Dark Star' so far...good choice for review!

I think I like the third one best, then the first one. I'd definitely go with black and white -- it says "scary writer type" perfectly. :)
